Clemson Student-Athletes Visit Helping Hands

Dec. 15, 2009

Eighteen Tiger athletes visited Helping Hands on Friday, December 4 to help the kids get into the Christmas spirit. Helping Hands, an emergency shelter for abused and neglected children, is currently home to 24 children ages 2-12. The athletes spent time with the kids creating Christmas crafts, baking cookies, reading stories and coloring. It was a special time for the kids and athletes to bond and have some fun.

Swimmer Katrina Obas remarked, “It was great to see how much a simple visit making crafts with the children and getting them into the holiday spirit really meant to them. It humbled me to see how fortunate I am and how appreciative even young children can be for something as simple as the time you give them to play and bond.”

Kerry McLaughlin of the swimming and diving team shared that “by the end of the night she had called me her new best friend.”

Solid Orange Squad members who participated in the event include Sarah Bechard (swimming and diving), Laura Browning (swimming and diving), Allison Colberg (rowing), Sarah Daanen (rowing), Kelly Fowler (swimming and diving), Alex Frederick (baseball), Corey Geer (rowing), Paige Griffith (rowing),Victoria Graham (rowing), Seth Neely (baseball), Cara Lennon (swimming and diving), Kerry McLaughlin (swimming and diving), Michelle Nance (rowing), Katrina Obas (swimming and diving), Deanna Piper (swimming and diving), Heather Savage (swimming and diving), Garrison Stevens (swimming and diving) and Josh Thrailkill (baseball).
