Clemson and Virginia Tech play to a 3-3 tie

BLACKSBURG, VA-Clemson and Virginia Tech played to a 3-3 tie in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament, but the Hokies advance to the second round by winning the penalty kick round at Blacksburg, VA Friday night. Virginia Tech is now 14-4-3 overall, and Clemson finishes the season 9-7-4 this season. Tonight’s game goes into the records as a tie. The two teams tied after 90 minutes of regulation and played two 10 minutes of overtime.

Virginia Tech scored first at the 20:44 mark as Bobby O’Brien scored on a penalty kick.

The Tigers evened the scored right before the half in the 43rd minute. Andre Borges crossed the ball from the left side and Kenny Cutler chipped the ball into the goal from the right.

The Hokies scored at the 54:32 mark as O’Brien again converted on a penalty kick. Clemson tied the score 2-2 as Justin Moore converted on a penalty kick in the 57th minute.

Virginia Tech scored at the 57:32 mark as O’Brien scored on a header. Charlie Howe sent a free kick into the box. O’Brien headed the ball in from eight yards out.

Clemson tied the score at the 68:25 mark into the match. Charlie Roberts crossed the ball from the left to Stuart Holden. Holden sent the ball to Souders who sent a diagonal shot in the nets from 14 yards out.

In the penalty kick round both team converted the first five penalty kicks each. In the second round of sudden death penalty kicks, Clemson’s Chase Hilgenbrinck’s attempt hit the right post but did not cross the line. Virginia Tech’s Dustin Dyer converted his penalty kick to give the Hokies the advantage.

“We did not deserve to loose,” said Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair. “We played with a lot of heart and we battled back under a lot of pressure. I am proud of our seniors and the contribution they made to our program. They went to four NCAA Tournaments and went to two NCAA quarterfinals. I thought we played with a lot of character. I am proud of our team and I thought we played with a lot of character.”
