Trahan, Glover Lead United States To First Day Lead

Aug. 12, 2001

Clemson, SC – Former Clemson All-American Lucas Glover and current Tiger junior D.J. Trahan combined to win three matches and give the United States nearly half of its 6.5 points on the first day of the 2001 Walker Cup Matches at Sea Island, GA. The event features the top amateurs in the United States against the top amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland.

The United States has a slim 6.5 to 5.5 lead after the first day. The competition concludes Sunday with four alternating shot matches in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. Glover combined with Georgia All-American Nick Cassini in the morning to defeat Luke Donald and Nick Dougherty of Great Britain and Ireland, 4 and 3. It was the first loss in Walker Cup play for Donald, the 1999 NCAA Champion when he played at Northwestern.

Glover and Cassini both won both their matches on Saturday, the only US players to do that. They combined for four of the US team’s 6.5 points.

Trahan and United States teammate Danny Green lost their foursomes match (alternating shot) to Steve O’Hara and Gary Wolstenholme, 5 and 3. But, Trahan, who won the Jones Cup on this same Ocean Forest Course in February with a four-stroke win over O’Hara, came back on Saturday afternoon to defeat O’Hara in singles play in the afternoon 2 and 1.

Trahan, who will compete in the US Amateur in two weeks, won four of the first six holes. He still had a 4-up lead standing on the 14th tee, but then dropped consecutive holes. Both players parred the 17th, giving Trahan the victory.

Glover defeated former Clemson teammate Michael Hoey in his afternoon singles match 1-up to give the United States the one-point leader after the first day. Glover won the first two holes, then Hoey settled down. Glover never had more than a one-hole lead the entire match, but was in the lead the entire match. He had a one-up lead heading to the 18th hole, then both players pared the last hole, giving Glover the win.

Hoey, who played for the Tigers from 1998-00, helped the Great Britain and Ireland team earlier in the day with a victory in foursomes play.
