Mills Qualifies for Match Play at US Amateur

CLEMSON, SC – Clemson junior Corbin Mills fired a second round 64 during stroke play qualifying at the United States Amateur in Erin, WI and has moved into the 64-player match-play portion of the championship.

Mills finished with a 36-hole score of 139 for the two rounds, a 75 at Erin Hills Country Club on Monday and the 64 at Blue Mound Country Club near Milwaukee that was completed on Wednesday. Mills’ 64 is his career best round for any tournament competition, including three shots better than his career best round playing for Clemson.

Mills started the second round in 167th place and obviously was in jeopardy of missing the cut for match play. But, he made birdie on his first two holes and shot a four-under-par 31 on the back side, his first nine of the day. He made another birdie on the par four second hole and stood at five-under-par for the round when play was halted Tuesday night due to weather.

Mills then made a birdie on the par-five fifth hole and made par the rest to finish with his six-under-par 64 for the round.

Mills finished in 19th place for the stroke play competition and now will face Jack Senior of England in the first round. That match was to start at 8:00 PM Eastern time and obviously will play just a couple of holes on Wednesday night. It will finish Thursday morning.

Mills is trying to win both the US Public Links and the US Amateur in the same year. In July Mills won the US Public Links with a championship victory over Derek Ernst in 37 holes.

Jacob Burger, Mills senior teammate, had rounds of 71-73 in the stroke play qualifier of the US Amateur and his 144 score was two shots off the cutline for a playoff. He finished in a tie for 96th place.
