Clemson, SC – Eight former Clemson Tigers will be in action at professional golf events this weekend, four on the PGA Tour and four on BUY.com tour.
The four former Tigers at this weekend’s Heritage Tournament at Hilton Head, SC will be Jonathan Byrd, John Engler, Lucas Glover and Jeff Julian. It will be the first career PGA Tour event for Engler and Glover, who both had All-America careers at Clemson between 1997-01. Engler has been a regular so far this year on the BUY.com Tour, while Glover will be playing his first event of the season.
Byrd is in his rookie season on the PGA Tour and has made three cuts in his previous 10 events. He finished 15th at the Tucson Open earlier this year, and won $51,000. He finished eighth on the BUY.com money list last year.
Clemson fans attending the event at Harbor Town will want to follow the 1:30 PM tee time on Thursday. Engler and Byrd have been paired together for the first two rounds. They have the 9:30 AM tee time on Friday. They were teammates at Clemson for three years, as Byrd was a senior in the spring of 2000.
The fourth former Clemson student in the Heritage is Jeff Julian. A Clemson student (but not a member of the golf team) in the early 1980s, Julian is playing this event on a sponsor’s exemption. He has been fighting Lou Gehrig’s disease, an illness that was diagnosed last fall.
The four former Clemson players who will be playing in the Arkansas Classic on the BUY.com Tour this weekend are Tommy Biershenk, Richard Coughlan, Charles Warren and Kevin Johnson. Biershenk made the cut at the Atlanta Classic on the PGA Tour two weeks ago Coughlan was the ACC Co-Player of the Year at Clemson as a senior in 1997, the same year Warren won the NCAA Tournament at Conway Farms. Johnson, an All-American at Clemson from 1987-89, played on the PGA Tour last year.
