Clemson men’s basketball head coach Oliver Purnell has named Alex Welp the coordinator of men’s basketball operations for the Tigers. Welp was promoted to the position after serving as the Tigers’ graduate assistant coach during the 2004-05 season.
“I am very excited to continue working for Clemson University and head coach Oliver Purnell and the men’s basketball staff,” said Welp. “I believe this is the beginning of a great era for the Clemson men’s basketball program, and I am looking forward to helping the staff and players build a nationally prominent program.”
A 2001 graduate of Wittenberg University, Welp received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, with a minor in secondary education while earning three varsity letters in basketball. Welp helped lead the Wittenberg Tigers to a 26-4 record and a #2 ranking in the NCAA Division III poll as a senior. The team won the NCAC Conference title in 2001, and were NCAA Tournament Regional finalists.
Following his graduation, Welp served as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Richmond under Head Coach John Beilein during the 2001-2002 academic year. While with the Spiders, Welp was involved in the on-court coaching and development of post players, and in the day-to-day breakdown and analysis of game and practice film. He also assisted with the recruitment of underclassmen and monitored study hall sessions. Welp helped the Spiders to a quarter-final appearance in the NIT after finishing second in the Atlantic-10 West Division and in the Atlantic-10 Conference Tournament.
Welp returned to his high school alma mater, Centerville High School, in 2002, where he served as a varsity assistant until accepting the position with the Tigers in 2004. While at Centerville, Welp helped the Elks to a 35-14 overall record. The teams were sectional champions and advanced to the district finals with an appearance in the state regional tournament in 2003-04. Welp also served as the organizer for the Centerville Cage Classic AAU Tournament and the Centerville Junior Varsity and Freshman Summer League in 2003.
