#25 Clemson Defeats #52 Virginia Tech 4-3

BLACKSBURG, VA – Hunter Harrington‘s win over Andreas Bjerrehus at number-two singles proved to be the clinching match in Clemson’s 4-3 victory over Virginia Tech in a men’s Atlantic Coast Conference tennis match at Blacksburg, VA Sunday afternoon.With the win, Clemson improves to 16-5 overall and 5-3 in the ACC.  Virginia Tech falls to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in league play.   This was Clemson’s first win over the Hokies since the 2008 season.  The Tigers last won in Blacksburg, VA in the 2005 season.Clemson swept all three doubles matches in today’s contest to claim the team point.  At number one doubles, Clemson’s 22nd-ranked Maden Brothers Yannick and Dominique defeated 14th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini 8-6.  The Maden brothers have a 19-6 record overall, and a 9-3 mark in dual match play.Austin Ansari gave Clemson a 2-0 lead when he defeated Trpimir Kujundzic at number-six singles 6-4, 6-2. Ansari is now 15-5 in singles action this season.From this point, Virginia Tech won the next two matches tying the score 2-2.  Joao Monteiro won over Zachary Rigsby 6-1, 6-4 at number-five singles.  At the number-one singles match #73 Amerigo Contini defeated #24 Yannick Maden 6-2, 7-5.The Tigers won the next two matches as Clemson’s Dominique Maden won over Lucas Oliveira 6-3, 6-2 at number-four singles.  Harrington defeated Bjerrehus 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Tigers at number-two singles making the score 4-2 in Clemson’s favor.  Harrington is now 18-8 overall this season and 14-5 in dual matches.Hunter Koontz of Virginia Tech defeated Gerardo Meza in the last match of the day 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the number-three singles contest.”It was a great performance today,” said Clemson Head Coach Chuck McCuen.  “I thought we competed very well, and we were focused.  Virginia Tech is a very good team, and this was an important win for us today.  I am very proud of our doubles teams.  We have worked extremely hard on our doubles play and it is showing.  Hunter continues to play hard, and he clinched another match for us.  I am very proud of him.”Clemson will play two more matches at home to conclude the regular season.  The Tigers will play host to Georgia Tech on Friday, April 19 at 2:30 p.m. and Wake Forest on Sunday, April 21 at 12:00 p.m.  The Tigers will begin play in the ACC Tournament that will take place on April 25-28 in Cary, NC.Clemson 4, Virginia Tech 3Singles1. #73 Amerigo Contini (VT) d. #24 Yannick Maden (CU) 6-2, 7-52.
