RALEIGH, N.C. — Clemson showed out on the first day of competition at the Lake Wheeler Invitational on Friday, winning four-of-five events and finishing as the runner-up in the other. The Tigers began the two-day regatta with an impressive performance that saw them qualify for all five finals without having to take part in any repechage races.
On a warm, sunny afternoon with light winds at Lake Wheeler, Clemson competed against regatta co-hosts No. 13 Duke and North Carolina and also rowed alongside Boston College, Central Florida, Miami and Stetson. The Tigers won their 1V8+, 2V8+, 1V4+ and 2V4+ heats and came in second place in their 3V8+ heat.
The Tigers kicked off their noteworthy day on the water by edging out UCF in the 1V8+ race, as the boat coxed by Kate Hadley won with a solid time of 6:33.138. Katie Herbolsheimer served as the coxswain for the 2V8+ boat, which clocked in at 6:48.796, nearly seven seconds faster than runner-up Miami. Perhaps the most notable achievement for the Tigers on the afternoon was defeating Duke in the 1V4+ race. Coxed by Julia Suplick, the 1V4+ crew recorded a winning time of 7:11.410.
Clemson will return to the water for the finals on Saturday, beginning with the 3V8+ final at 9 a.m. and concluding with the grand 1V8+ final at 11 a.m.
