OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — The Cardinal Invite concluded with a morning session on Sunday, as Clemson competed against No. 7 Virginia and Minnesota in five races. Calm waters, cloudy skies, light winds and mild temperatures made for pleasant racing conditions on Melton Lake. The Tigers fielded a boat in the 1V8+, 2V8+, 3V8+, 1V4+ and 2V4+ events, coming in third place in each of them.
The Cavaliers won all five of the races, while the Golden Gophers took second place in all of them. In the premier 1V8+ event, Clemson’s boat, which was coxed by Kate Hadley, crossed the finish line with a team best 6:35.860. Unfortunately, the Tigers “caught a crab” by losing control of an oar in the first 500 meters of the 2V8+ event, thereby preventing Clemson from contending in the race.
In the 12-team regatta hosted by the Louisville Cardinals, the Tigers experienced their most success in the 3V8+ event, winning both of their appearances on Saturday. Clemson also served as the runner-up in the 1V4+ and 2V8+ races on Saturday afternoon, picking up steam down the stretch and finishing strongly in both events.
Clemson will return to action in early April at the Sunshine State Invitational. Held in Sarasota, Fla., on April 2-3, the two-day regatta will be take place at Nathan Benderson Park. The heats are scheduled for Friday, and the finals are slated for Saturday.
