CLEMSON, S.C. — Establishing a new program record with 63 total points at the ACC Championship, Clemson rowing produced one of its best-ever performances at the flagship conference event. The Tigers took home fourth place with a solid showing on Saturday, using a strong finish in the 1V8+ grand final to pull away from Notre Dame in the standings and finish just one place shy of a spot on the podium.
A mild, sunny morning with calm conditions on Lake Hartwell set the stage for the ACC’s regular season-ending regatta to feature plenty of quality rowing, and Saturday’s races did not disappoint. No. 3 Virginia won gold with 99 points, finishing a comfortable 15 points ahead of No. 17 Duke, which collected silver with 84 points. Bronze was awarded to No. 11 Syracuse, which amassed 81 points. Virginia, which placed first in all five grand finals on Saturday, has now won 11 consecutive ACC Championships.
Clemson, which hosted the event at its Lake Hartwell boathouse, entered the final race of the day, the 1V8+ grand final, just one point ahead of Notre Dame. The Kate Hadley-coxed Tiger boat proceeded to provide Clemson with some breathing room in the race for fourth by clocking in at 6:35.622, which was good for fourth in the premier event.
The Tigers competed in each of the five grand finals and crossed the finish line fourth in all but the 2V8+ event, with Notre Dame edging Clemson out for fourth via a photo finish. In the most recent ACC Championship in 2019, Clemson tied for fourth, making this year’s improved fourth-place showing at ACCs a fitting performance for a Tiger team that has impressed all season long.
