Volleyball Falls in Close Match at Wake

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Clemson volleyball team fell, 3-1 (25-27, 24-26, 25-22, 25-27), to Wake Forest in the Tigers’ first ACC road match of the season in Reynolds Gym Sunday afternoon. Clemson, now 5-9 on the season, was led by Annie Carter, who posted 12 kills while hitting .476 for the match.

 

The Tigers were edged by the Demon Deacons, 27-25, in a close first set, which saw 17 ties and seven lead changes. Clemson gave Wake Forest trouble in the second, again forcing extra plays to decide the set, but the the Demon Deacons prevailed to claim the set, 26-24.

 

Coming out of the break, the Demon Deacons jumped out to a 20-16 lead, but the Tigers rallied off seven straight points with Megan McGinley behind the service line, who posted two service aces during the series, to help gain a 23-20 Tiger lead late in the third. A Keely Hayes kill, assisted by Caroline Pearson, won the set, 25-22, in Clemson’s favor.

 

Wake Forest went on to take the fourth set and the match, 27-25, again needing extra plays to decide the set.

 

Jaden Light posted a career-high nine blocks, besting her previous career high of eight, which she set against Boston College last season.

 

Up next, Clemson hosts North Carolina (4-6, 1-1 ACC) Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. in Jervey Gym. Friday’s contest against the Tar Heels will stream on ACC Network Extra. Live stats can be accessed at clemsontigers.com.
