Tigers Split with Mercer to Open Season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Clemson opened the 2016 season splitting matches against Mercer Saturday afternoon at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Club. The Tigers took the first match of the day in convincing fashion, 4-0. The second match required all three doubles matches and all six singles matches to be decided, with Clemson ultimately falling 4-3, to bring its overall record to 1-1 to start the season.

“Our coaches and team learned a lot from today’s matches versus Mercer. We all have roles to play and will continue to work as a collective group to achieve our long term goals,” said Head Coach Chuck McCuen. “We will go right back to work on Monday to get ready for Dartmouth and Penn State next week. Credit today goes out to the Bears, who fought all day long.”

In the first match of the day, the Tigers swept doubles play en route to clinching the doubles point over Mercer. Robert Dudley and Luke Johnson set the pace, cruising to a 6-1 win over the Bears on court one. Alex Favrot and Daffra Sanon clinched the point with a 6-4 win at number two. Austin Ansari and Jess Jones completed the sweep, recording a 6-3 victory on court three.

In singles play, Clemson took a quick 3-0 lead with wins on courts five and court six. Dudley started the won in two sets (6-3, 6-4) at number five, and Brent Lett continued with a straight-set win (6-2, 6-2) at six singles. Sanon then clinched the match, also winning in two sets (6-2, 6-2), on court two.

In the nightcap, Clemson fell behind after losing the doubles point to the Bears. Mercer won on court three, before Christian Harris and Jess Jones overpowered the Bears, 6-0, at number two. The doubles point came down to Favrot and Sanon on court one, where they were outlasted by the Bears, 4-6.

Johnson breezed through at number one singles for the Tigers’ first point, winning 6-4, 6-0. Austin Ansari fell on court three, before Favrot downed his Mercer opponent on court two, 6-1, 7-5 to knot the score at 2-2. Mercer took the lead once again when Harris was defeated on court four, before Lett tied the score again at 3-3, winning 6-4, 6-3 at number six. The match game down to Jess Jones, who was in a third set at number five singles. Jones was down 0-3 early in the set, and despite a hard fought comeback effort, was not able to overcome the Bears’ Ruben Vanoppen, falling 6-2, 4-6, 4-6.

Clemson returns to the courts next weekend when it travels to Hanover N.H. for two contests. The Tigers take on Dartmouth at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22 and Penn State at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23.
