DURHAM, S.C. – The Clemson men’s tennis team fell to No. 20 Duke on Friday evening at the Ambler Tennis Stadium, 5-2. The Tigers fall to 9-9 (3-7 ACC), while the Blue Devils improve to 14-10 (5-4 ACC). Freshman Yizhou Liu and sophomore Simon Baudry picked up the two points for the Tigers in singles play.
The Blue Devils clinched the doubles point over the Tigers with wins on courts one and three. Duke took a 2-0 lead over the Tigers with a straight-set win at No. 1, with 16th-ranked Nicolas Alvarez defeating 64th-ranked Alex Favrot 6-4, 6-2. Baudry cut the lead to 3-1 after defeating the 107th-ranked Catalin Mateas in straight set at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2. Duke clinched the match with the next point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5. Liu picked up the Tigers second of the match, winning in straight sets at No. 4, 6-3, 6-4. The Blue Devils finished the match with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win at No. 3.
Clemson travels down the road to face No. 8 North Carolina on Sunday, April 15. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
