Mesarovic, Bladelius Take Home Doubles Championship as Tigers Complete Competition at ITA Regionals
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Marko Mesarovic and Henrik Bladelius took home the doubles championship at ITA Regionals in Columbia, S.C., from October 8-12, allowing them to qualify for the NCAA Individual Doubles Championship in November. Bruno Kuzuhara earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ian Mayew of North Carolina to reach the tournament final, allowing him to qualify for the NCAA Individual Singles Championship as well.
In Singles, the Tigers put together a solid week, with three Tigers advancing to the tournament Quarterfinals: Kuzuhara, Bladelius, and Matisse Farzam. The Tigers earned a total of 12 singles wins overall, defeating opponents from North Carolina, UNC Charlotte, Duke, South Carolina, Davidson College, UNC Greensboro, South Carolina State, UNC Wilmington, Wake Forest, and NC State.
The Tigers’ doubles campaign was highlighted by Mesarovic and Bladelius, who won five matches en route to their tournament championship after receiving a first-round bye, including a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Benton/Kodat of NC State. The pair also defeated opponents from Davidson College, North Carolina, and South Carolina throughout the weekend. Kuzuhara and Romain Gales also picked up an 8-1 victory over Sanchez/Thurgur of UNC Charlotte.
Mesarovic and Bladelius are the third doubles pair from Clemson to qualify for the NCAA Championship so far this fall, with Viktor Markov/Noa Vukadin and Pires/Farzam qualifying at the ITA All-Americans Tournament in September. Kuzuhara joins Markov in the NCAA Individual Singles Tournament, with Markov also qualifying at ITA All-Americans.
Two more qualifying events will take place in November as the Tigers head to the ITA Masters in Rome, Ga. and the ITA Sectionals in Chapel Hill, N.C. Both tournaments begin on November 5.
