Georgia Tech Defeats Tigers, 3-1

CLEMSON, S.C. – In a rematch of Thursday’s contest in O’Keefe Gym, No. 8 Georgia Tech (7-1, 7-1 ACC) earned its seventh straight win to close out its 2020 fall season over Clemson, 25-20, 17-25, 25-18, 25-19. The Tigers were led by Solei Thomas, who tallied 10 kills on 24 swings and hit .292.

The Yellow Jackets won the first after hitting .306 as Mariana Brambilla and Kayla Kaiser both posted five kills each and combined to hit .692 in the opening frame. Clemson freshman Cate Long dialed up four of her 10 kills in game No. 1.

In set No. 2, Clemson broke the Yellow Jackets’ 18-game winning streak, dating back to Sept. 25. Long was brilliant behind the service line, earning two of her five service aces in game No. 2. Her second ace of the came in the midst of a 4-0 Clemson run late in the set, which helped put the game out of reach for Georgia Tech. The Tigers also received a nice boost offensively from sophomore Ani Clark, who came off the bench in the second. Clark put down all three balls set her way, including the final kill of the set. Lisie Kit and Anna Renwick also chipped in one service ace each in set No. 2.

Coming out of the break, both teams exchanged runs in the third, but it was the Yellow Jackets’ 5-0 run, which was led by Kaiser, to close out the set that proved to be the difference. Another run by Georgia Tech in the middle of the fourth put the set and ultimately the match out of the Tigers’ reach. 

Up next, Clemson (1-3, 1-3 ACC) wraps up its Fall slate as it hosts Wake Forest (0-4, 0-4 ACC) on Thursday and Friday. Both matches are slated for 4 p.m. Thursday’s match is set to air on ACC Network, while Friday’s contest is slated to stream on ACCNX.
