Clemson has now beaten two teams in the College World Series it had never beaten previously. Clemson was 0-3 against Arizona State prior to its victory against the Sun Devils on Monday and was 0-1 against Oklahoma prior to its victory today. All four of those losses had come in NCAA Tournament play.
The victory was the seventh for the Tigers in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. That ties the school record for wins in an NCAA Tournament. Clemson also won seven in 2002.
Clemson has now won four consecutive NCAA Tournament games, the first time the Tigers have done that since 2006 when Clemson won six in a row, but only one of those was at the CWS.
This is the second time in 12 appearances that Clemson has started 2-0 at the College World Series. The only other time was 2002 when Clemson defeated Nebraska at Georgia Tech in the first two games. The only other year Clemson won two games at the CWS was 1996 when Clemson lost to Miami, then defeated Oklahoma State and Alabama, before losing again against Miami.
With the victory, Clemson has in effect reached the Final Four of the NCAA Baseball Tournament. This is the first time Clemson has reached the Final Four of an NCAA Tournament in any sport since 2005 when the men’s soccer team reached the Final Four.
Scott Weisman got his third victory of the NCAA Tournament. He has tied the Clemson record for wins in a tournament. Harold Stowe (1958) and Matt Henrie (2002), each had three wins previously.
Weisman now has four NCAA Tournament wins against no losses. He is one win behind Stowe’s career record of five NCAA Tournament wins set between 1958-59. Weisman now has allowed just five earned runs in 26 innings in his career in the NCAA Tournament for an ERA of 1.73.
Six of Clemson’s seven NCAA Tournament wins have been recorded by natives of New England. Scott Weisman is from Boxborough, MA and has three wins, while Casey Harman is from South Burlington, VA and has two wins. Alex Frederick and he is not from New England, but is from nearby Lagrangeville, NY. Of course, Clemson Head Coach Jack Leggett is a native of Vermont and played his college baseball at Maine.
Fredrick got his second save in two games at the College World Series. He had just two saves in the first 42 games of his career, now has two saves in his last two games to give him four saves in 44 games for his career.
Clemson catcher Spencer Kieboom had a two-RBI single in the win over Oklahoma. He now has 10 RBIs for the year and seven of them have come in the NCAA Tournament.
Brad Miller extended his hitting streak to 19 consecutive games with a single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
John Hinson has had at least two hits in eight of the nine Clemson NCAA Tournament games. He is now 19-37 (.514) in the NCAA Tourney, including his 3-4 day against Oklahoma. He has tied Khalil Greene’s Clemson record for total hits in one NCAA Tournament. Greene had 19 for the Tigers in the 2002 NCAA Tournament.
Clemson outfielder Kyle Parker had a triple in the fifth inning when his drive to center field hit the top of the fence above the 408-marker and bounced back into play. It was Clemson’s first extra base hit of the CWS. It was the first triple of Parker’s career. He had gone 682 consecutive at bats without a triple, the longest streak in Clemson history. Craig Roberson (1980-83) went 637 consecutive at bats without a triple in his Clemson career and that was the record prior to Parker.
