Clemson is now 2-0 in overtime games this year. The Tigers defeated Southern Illinois earlier this year in Hawaii by an 83-75 score. Brad Brownell is now 3-1 in his Clemson career in overtime games.
This was the first time Clemson has won an overtime game at home since the 2007-08 season when the Tigers defeated Wake Forest, 80-75.
Clemson is now 9-1 in home games on February 25.
This was Clemson’s first overtime victory against NC State since Feb. 19, 1966 when Clemson defeated the Pack at the old Charlotte Coliseum, 76-74. Joe Ayoob made a 45-foot shot at the buzzer to give Clemson the victory. Ayoob was at today’s game in conjunction with Clemson’s 100-year anniversary reunion. Clemson had lost four consecutive overtime games to the Pack
Andre Young made the game winning three-point shot with 11.8 seconds left from the left corner in overtime. It was the first time a Clemson player had made a field goal with less than 15 seconds left to win a game since March 2, 2008 when Terrence Oglesby made a three-pointer at Maryland with 2.3 seconds left to give Clemson a 73-70 victory. It was the first time any Clemson player had made a game winning field goal at Littlejohn Coliseum since Jan. 7, 2007 when James Mays scored on a driving layup with 2.2 seconds left.
Young was 0-5 on three-point shots in regulation, then made 2-2 on three-pointers in overtime.
Young moved into the top 25 in Clemson history in career scoring today and now has 1184 points. He moved ahead of Shawan Robinson into the top 25. He had 1177 for his career from 2002-06. Robinson was at today’s game.
Tanner Smith made 8-9 free throws, including 2-2 with 4.1 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. He tied a career high for free throws made and attempted in a game. The other 8-9 game was against Southern Illinois in a game in Hawaii. Ironically that was Clemson’s other overtime game this year.
Clemson won the turnover margin today, 12-13. Clemson has won the turnover margin stat in 12 of 14 ACC games this year and leads the conference in turnover margin in league games.
Clemson has now won 7 of 9 games against NC State, and has won four in a row at Littlejohn Coliseum. NC State has not won at Littlejohn since the 2005-06 season when the Pack won in double overtime, 94-85.
Freshman T.J. Sapp had seven points, including a pair of three-point shots. It was the most points in a game for Sapp since he scored 11 at Boston College on Jan. 12, 2012. It was the first time he had made two three-point goals in a game since that contest at Boston College.
Clemson is now 5-2 in ACC home games this year and 19-4 in ACC home games over the last three years.
