Baseball Beats Florida State 8-4 In ACC Tournament Second Round

2000 ACC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP MAY 18, 2000 – FORT MILL, SC SECOND ROUND

FORT MILL, S.C. – Ryan Mottl struck out a season high 10 batters to lead second seeded Clemson to a 8-4 win over third seeded Florida State in the second round of the ACC Baseball Championship at Knights Stadium on Thursday night. Mottl (8-3) tossed a complete game six hitter, allowing four runs and walking only three.

Florida State (44-14) pulled out to an early lead scoring one run in the first. Chris Smith drew a lead off walk and moved over to second on John Ford-Griffin’s single. Marshall McDougall then singled to right field scoring Smith.

Brian Ellis hit his first home run of the season in the second inning, a two-run shot to the give Clemson (44-14) a 2-1 lead. The Tigers also added a single run in the fourth and fifth innings for a 4-1 advantage.

McDougall erased the Tiger lead in the sixth inning with a three-run bomb to right center field.

Clemson would not be without the lead for long. Khalil Greene hit a solo home run to right field with one out in its half of the sixth to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead.

The Tigers increased their lead in the seventh with another run. Bradley LeCroy started the inning with a double and later scored on a bases loaded walk.

Two more insurance runs crossed the plate in the eighth for Clemson. Jeff Baker hit a pinch hit double down the right field line to lead things off. Ryan Riley reached on a single and Brian Holstad, who came in to pinch run for Baker, moved to third. Back-to-back walks to Mike Calitiri and Justin Singleton forced Holstad in and Riley scored on a base hit by Casey Stone.

Mike Ziegler took the loss for the Seminoles, going 6.2 innings and giving up six runs, while fanning 10 batters.

The Tigers will take on top seeded Georgia Tech Friday night at 7:30 and Florida State will face North Carolina in an elimination game tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
