WTEN: No. 21 Tigers Fall 4-1 in Road Duel at No. 12 Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 21 Clemson Women’s Tennis (10-3) fell on the road at No. 12 California (3-0), 4-1 on Friday evening. 

In doubles play, No. 23 Rinon Okuwaki and Jade Groen started a comeback campaign, winning three games to tie the match 3-3 but it proved not quite enough as the pair fell 6-4 to Mao Mushika and Johanne Svendsen on court one. On court two, Romana Cisovska and Gaia Parravicini stayed steady through the match but ultimately fell 6-4 to Berta Passola Folch and Tiziana Marie Schomburg. Talia Neilson-Gatenby and Artemis Aslanisvili put up a fight for the Tigers keeping the match within one but fell 6-4 to Millie Johanna Moerk and Anya Murthy to conclude doubles.

California grabbed the first two singles points to go up 3-0. Moerk defeated Neilson-Gatenby in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-4 and Passola Folch beat Cisovska, 6-1, 7-6(2) before Okuwaki earned a point back, defeating No. 55 Mao Mushika, 6-2, 7-5. On court one, Groen put up a fight, but eventually fell to Svendsen, 6-4, 6(4)-7, 6-4 to finish off the match and give the Golden Bears a 4-1 victory. At the time of abandonment, the Tigers held the lead in the two other singles matches, with No. 123 Ria Bhakta ahead of Laura Cilekova, 3-6, 7-6(1), 5-1 and Aslanisvili leading Schomburg, 6-3, 6(4)-7, 4-1.

UP NEXT: Clemson travels to No. 18 Stanford on Sunday, Feb. 22 for a 3 p.m. match before heading back to Clemson for a six match home slate at Duckworth.
