Women’s Tennis Takes 6-1 Decision Over Virginia

CLEMSON, S.C. – The 20th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team won a 6-1 decision over #62 Virginia on Sunday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The Tigers improve to 15-3 overall and 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with the win, while the Cavaliers fall to 9-8 (0-3 ACC).

Clemson won all three doubles matches to take the team doubles point. The Tigers’ Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito teamed up at flight one doubles to defeat Virginia’s Mariko Fritz-Krockow and Kristen James by a score of 8-1. At number two doubles, the Tigers’ Julie Coin and Alix Lacelarie won an 8-0 decision over the Cavaliers’ Lauren Bruch and Shannon Stough. Clemson’s team of Richele LeSaldo and Karen Rombouts defeated their Virginia opponents, Dora Bechliwanis and Caroline Hammond by a score of 8-6 at flight three.

In singles action, ninth-ranked Coin won a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Fritz-Krockow at the number one flight. At the second singles position, 63rd-ranked Alvarez defeated Kristen James by a score of 6-3, 6-3. The Tigers’ Brito was victorious over Dora Bechliwanis at flight three by a score of 6-1, 6-2, while Rombouts won a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Bruch at four singles. Lacelarie of Clemson defeated the Cavaliers’ Marta Bechliwanis 6-3, 6-3 at number five singles. LeSaldo dropped a three-set decision to Stough (2-6, 6-3, 1-0(10-5)) at flight six.

Clemson will travel to Atlanta on Thursday, April 1 to take on Georgia Tech. The match between the Tigers and the Yellow Jackets is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. and will be held at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on Georgia Tech’s campus.
