Women?s Tennis Run Comes to End in Round of 16

ATHENS, Ga. – The women’s tennis team fell to fourth-seeded Duke, 4-1, in an NCAA Team Championship Round of 16 contest that finished after midnight on Friday morning on the Feild Courts at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Clemson closes the season at 22-7 overall, and advanced to the Round of 16 for the ninth time in 11 seasons.  Thursday’s match was originally scheduled for 7 p.m., but did not start until after 9 p.m. due to the (1) Georgia and (16) Southern California match running more than five hours.  Clemson, who knocked Duke from their number-one ranking earlier in the season, fell to the Blue Devils in the ACC Championship Quarterfinals, and again on Thursday in the NCAA Championships. Clemson’s lone point came from freshman Joana Eidukonyte, who upended Marianne Jodoin, 6-0, 6-1, on court six.  Duke claimed its four points with the doubles point, as well as straight-set wins on courts three, four, and five. Romy Koelzer and Yana Koroleva each led their respective remaining singles matches in third sets when play was halted.  Koroleva and Koelzer have both qualified for the NCAA Singles Championships, which begin May 21 at the same facility. Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies will compete in the Doubles Championships.   Tennis Match Results Clemson vs Duke University May 15, 2014 at Athens, Ga.
