Women’s Tennis Posts 5-2 Upset Over #12 Virginia Commonwealth

RICHMOND, VA – The 14th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team won its third straight match on Saturday afternoon, posting a 5-2 upset over #12 Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond, VA. The Tigers also jumped out to an early 1-0 lead for the third consecutive contest, claiming the flight two and three doubles matches.

Clemson improved to 5-1 with the victory, while the Rams fell to 8-2 on the year.

Carol Salge and Estefania Balda won over Maria Klokotzky and Viktoria Konstantinova at number two doubles, 8-5, while Maria Brito and Alexandra Luc defeated Vera Petrashevitch and Olena Leonchuk at the third position, 8-6. The win was the fifth straight for Brito and Luc, as the Tiger tandem improved to 8-2 overall. Virginia Commonwealth’s team of Marianna Yuferova and Olga Borisova edged Federica van Adrichem and Ani Mijacika, 8-6, at flight one to avoid the sweep.

In singles action, Clemson recorded wins at the flight two, three, four and six positions. Mijacika eked out a three-set victory over Borisova in the number two match-up after falling in the first set, 5-7. She rebounded to edge her Ram counterpart in the second and thirds by 7-5 margins. Ina Hadziselimovic then defeated Klokotzky at flight three, 6-4, 6-4, and Selma Babic won over Leonchuk in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 at the number six. Van Adrichem came from behind to claim the flight four victory over Konstantinova. Konstantinova won the first set, 6-0, before van Adrichem claimed the second, 6-3, and third, 7-5, for her fourth straight win.

The Rams’ Yuferova defeated Salge at the top position, 7-5, 6-3, while Brito suffered a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Petrashevitch at flight five.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 16 as they take on the Furman Paladins in Greenville, SC.
