Women’s Tennis Picks Up ACC Win With 5-2 Victory Over Maryland Sunday

CLEMSON, SC – The Tiger tennis team, ranked #32, earned its 11th victory of the 2006 season with a 5-2 win over 31st-ranked Maryland at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. Clemson continued its success in doubles matches, claiming its 12th doubles point of the year, while sophomore Carol Salge improved her overall singles record to 17-7.

In doubles play, the Tigers won matches at the flight one and three positions to take a 1-0 lead over Maryland. Carol Salge and Federica van Adrichem. The ninth-ranked Tiger team tied the match at four points apiece and then went ahead, 6-4, before the Terps knotted the score at 6-6. Salge and van Adrichem took an 8-7 in the match and broke Maryland’s serve to clinch the doubles point for Clemson.

The Tigers then won singles matches at the flights two through five positions. In the flight two match-up, Salge defeated Baker, 6-3, 6-3, while van Adrichem won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Veronika Subertova at flight three. Brito won a three-set match against Mihneva at the flight four position, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5. At number five, Luc defeated Dent, 7-6(4), 6-3, for her 11th win of the year.

Daniela Alvarez fell to 59th-ranked But in the top singles position, while Clemson’s Kathi Gerber fell to Amir at flight six by a 6-2, 6-2 margin.

The Tigers will return to action on Friday, Mar. 31 when they will travel to Tallahassee, FL to take on the Florida State Seminoles. That match is slated for 2:00 PM.
