Women’s Tennis Falls To #14 Duke, 6-1, On Saturday Afternoon

DURHAM, NC – The Clemson women’s tennis team, ranked 24th in the latest Fila/ITA Tennis poll, dropped a 6-1 decision to #14 Duke on Saturday afternoon in Durham, NC. With the win, the Blue Devils improved to 14-5 and 7-1 against conference opponents, while the Tigers fell to 12-6 overall, 5-3 in the ACC with the loss.

Duke claimed all three doubles match-ups to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Daniela Bercek and Jennifer Zika upset Clemson’s ninth-ranked team of Carol Salge and Federica van Adrichem, 9-8(4), at the flight one position. At the number two slot, Daniela Alvarez and Alexandra Luc fell to the Blue Devils’ team of Jackie Carleton and Melissa Mang, 8-1, while Tara Iyer and Jessi Robinson won an 8-6 decision over Maria Brito and Marie Scriba at flight three.

The Tigers did not fare well in singles competition either, as Luc scored the only point for Clemson on the afternoon. She won over Robinson, who retired in the third set. Duke’s Iyer won by a 6-1, 6-0 margin over Brito at flight four, and then Clelia Deltour defeated Tiger Kathi Gerber, 6-0, 6-1, at flight six. Mang clinched the match for the Blue Devils with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against van Adrichem in the flight three contest. Salge dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Duke’s sixth-ranked Bercek at the top singles slot, and then Carleton won 6-4, 6-2 over Alvarez in the flight three match-up.

Clemson will next face #5 North Carolina on Sunday. The match is slated to begin at 1:00 PM at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, NC.
