CLEMSON, SC – Clemson junior Carol Salge posted an upset of South Florida’s 10th-ranked singles player and the Tigers went on to defeat the Bulls, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. With the win, Clemson improved to 2-0 on the year.
South Florida claimed a hard-fought doubles point as each match was a battle. Shadisha Robinson and Gabriela Duch, the #22-ranked team in the nation, eked out a 9-8(6) victory over Salge and Estefania Balda in the flight one match-up, while the Bulls’ tandem of Iciri Rai and Liz Cruz narrowly defeated Maria Brito and Ina Hadziselimovic at flight three, 9-7. Clemson claimed a win at the number-two position as Federica van Adrichem and Ani Mijacika posted an 8-6 victory over Courtney Vernon and Jessica Sweeting.
In singles action, Mijacika, Hadziselimovic, Brito and Luc won their respective matches along with Salge’s upset at the number one slot. Mijacika came from behind to post a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Sweeting at flight three, while Hadziselimovic defeated Cruz at the number four position by a 6-3, 6-4 margin. Brito won her flight five match against Duch, 7-5, 6-1, and Luc defeated Rai, 7-5, 6-1, at number six.
South Florida’s only singles victory was a three-set win for 54th-ranked Vernon at flight two over Balda, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Tigers will begin play at the 2007 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Thursday in Madison, WI.
