Women’s Tennis Defeats Maryland, 6-3

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team, ranked 35th nationally, defeated Maryland 6-3 Saturday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in Clemson. The win improves the Tigers’ record to 11-5 overall, 3-2 ACC.

Clemson sophomore Carmina Giraldo, ranked 24th nationally, defeated Delila Causevic 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 at number one singles, and freshman Laurence Jayet defeated Stacy Walkowitz 6-4, 6-0 at number three singles. The Tigers also earned points for wins at number five and six singles. Freshman Anna Savitskaya defeated Chrissie Terrill 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at flight five, while junior Cinny Clausen won by default at flight six. Maryland earned wins at flight two, where Jessica Johnson defeated freshman Renata Brito 6-3, 6-4, and at flight four, where Catherine Valantin defeated Christina Oldock 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles action, Giraldo and senior Cath Galvin teamed up to beat Johnson and Walkowitz 8-5 at flight one. The Terps took a 9-7 win at number two doubles, where Valantin and Terrill defeated Brito and Jayet. Savitskaya and Oldock won by default at flight three.

Clemson will play host to Virginia on Sunday at noon.
