MADISON, WI – The Tiger women’s tennis team swept all three doubles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over Brigham Young at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Friday. With the win, Clemson improved to 3-1 on the year, while the Cougars fell to 2-2 overall.
The Tigers will conclude play at the tournament on Saturday as they will take on UCLA at 10:00 am Eastern Time at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, WI.
At the top doubles flight, Ani Mijacika and Federica van Adrichem defeated Anastasia Surkova and Jennifer Miccoli, 8-4, while Clemson’s number two team of Maria Brito and Alexandra Luc won easily over Lauren Jones and Sofia Holden, 8-1. Estefania Balda and Ina Hadziselimovic completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory against Chie Hayasaka and Polly Chang at flight three.
In singles action, van Adrichem recorded her second straight two-set victory as she handled Hayasaka at flight five, 6-3, 6-1. Hadziselimovic fell in her flight three match-up to Kristina Doerr, 6-3, 6-3, for the Cougars’ first point of the day. Mijacika then put the Tigers ahead, 3-1, with a three-set victory at the number one position. She defeated Jones, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Balda clinched the match for Clemson with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Surkova at flight two and Brito recorded the Tigers’ fifth point, defeating Holden in the number four match-up, 7-6(6), 5-7, 10-5. Luc then suffered a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Chang at the flight five position for Brigham Young’s final point of the afternoon.
