GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team participated in the Furman Fall Classic Tennis Tournament held this weekend. The Tigers had three individuals and one doubles team finish in fourth place in their respective flights.
Christina Oldock finished fourth in flight four. Oldock opened the tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 win over MTYU’s Stacy Varnell before falling to Tennessee’s Kim Gates in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 1-6) in the semifinals. Iowa’s Pascale Veraverbeke defeated Oldock 6-4, 6-0 to take third place.
Clemson’s Ana Stiglic won her first round match over Steffi Hoch of Iowa in flight five. Stiglic was forced to withdraw due to an injury in the semifinals, but still placed fourth overall.
Freshman Ashlea Bowen won her first collegiate tennis match in flight six with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Wisconsin’s Mindy Sheppard. Jennifer Hodgman of Iowa defeated Bowen 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals, and Vanderbilt’s Lauren Rose defeated Bowen 6-0, 6-1 for third place.
The Tiger doubles team of Renata Brito and Laurence Jayet defeated Wisconsin’s Vanessa Rauh and LaraVojnok 8-1 to advance to the semifinals where they were defeated 8-1 by Tennessee’s Alison Ojeda and Vilmarie Castellvi. Brito and Jayet dropped another 8-1 decision to Jennifer Radman and Kathy Boyanovich of South Carolina to finish fourth.
Top-seeded Renata Brito dropped matches to Katarina Markovski of South Carolina (3-6, 3-6), Tennessee’s Alison Ojeda (3-6, 4-6), and Wisonsin’s Vanessa Rauh (6-4, 5-7, 2-6) en route to an eighth place finish.
Laurence Jayet finished seventh in flight two singles. Jayet lost her opening round match to Sarah Riske of Vanderbilt 6-3, 6-1 and was defeated by Furman’s Meredith Moore 6-3, 6-3. She defeated MTSU’s Michaela Gridling 6-1, 6-2 to take seventh place.
In flight three singles, Anna Savitskaya finished eighth. Tennessee’s Agnes Wiski handed Savitskaya a 6-0, 6-1 loss in the first round. Tanja Buchheim of MTSU defeated Savitskaya 6-2, 6-4 before Erica Johnson of Iowa defeated her 7-6 (1), 6-2 to place eighth.
Sunnie Harmon finished seventh in flight seven singles. Harmon lost an opening round match to Furman’s 6-1, 6-4 before falling to Tennessee’s Catherine Hall 6-4, 6-4. Harmon defeated Laurie Ferguson of MTSU 6-3, 6-0 to place seventh.
The doubles duo of Christina Oldock placed sixth in flight two doubles. They lost an 8-0 decision to Vanderbilt’s Riske and Tsoubanos before defeating Iowa’s Haas and Veraverbeke 8-3. Tennessee’s Gates and Cleveland defeated Savitskaya and Oldock 8-4 to take fifth place.
In flight three doubles, Sunnie Harmon and Ashlea Bowen finished sixth. Furman’s Cochran and Thomson defeated them 8-2 in the first round. Bowen and Harmon defeated MTSU’s Buchheim and Kaur 8-6 before falling to Vanderbilt’s Rose and Scott 8-3.
