AUBURN, Ala. — Clemson established a school record for goals in a women’s soccer match in defeating the Auburn Tigers in Auburn, AL, Tuesday afternoon. It was the season opener for the Clemson Lady Tigers, who are ranked seventh in the latest women’s college soccer poll.
The Lady Tigers open their home schedule Sunday afternoon against Maryland at 2:00 PM at Riggs Field.
Clemson broke its school record of nine goals in a game set in a 9-2 victory over UNC Charlotte in 1994, and in a 9-0 victory over Appalachian State in 1995. Tracy Leone’s team also set a school record for highest percentage of goals on shot attempts. Clemson scored on 10 of its 16 shots on Tuesday, the first game of over a .500 goal percentage in women’s soccer history. The previous record was set against UNC Charlotte in 1994 when Clemson scored nine goals on 19 shots.
Three different Lady Tigers scored two goals apiece. Sara Burkett, a returning second-team All-American from last year’s 10th ranked team, had two goals and an assist. Allison Burpee had a pair of goals within an eight-minute spurt in the first half, while Libby King had two goals, just 10 minutes apart in the first half.
Clemson had five goals in each half in its record setting performance. Also scoring for Clemson were Lea Shreve, Sheri Bueter and substitutes Tatum Clowney and Kati Reid. Clowney and Reid were playing in their first varsity game for Clemson. Lady Tiger goal keeper Katie Carson recorded a shutout in her first college start.
Clemson did not score in the first 24 minutes of the first half, then scored five goals over the next 20 minutes to put the match out of reach.
