The Clemson women’s basketball team will conclude the home portion of its 2004-05 schedule when the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech come to town on Thursday. Tip-off between the two teams is set for 7:06 PM, as the game is being televised by Comcast Sports Southeast. Thursday’s game is also senior night and parents’ night.
The game will feature a celebration of 30 years of women’s athletics, in accordance with the university’s overall dedication to 50 years of co-education. Displays depicting the history of women’s athletics will be available in the concourse area of Littlejohn Coliseum at 5:30 PM, with student-athletes and coaches serving as representatives for their respective sports. Fans are encouraged to come early and attend the pre-game festivities.
Clemson, who enters with a record of 7-18 (1-11 ACC), has just one senior on its roster. Lacey Shafer has appeared in 70 career games as a Lady Tiger, with five starts. She scored a career-high 15 points versus a 16th-ranked North Carolina as a freshman in 2001-02. Thursday’s game also marks parents’ night, as players and managers will be escorted by their parents and honored during halftime.
The Lady Tigers fell to Wake Forest, 68-60, last time out. Clemson fell victim to a 40-point onslaught by Liz Strunk, who scored 70 points in two games versus the Lady Tigers this season. Her effort overshadowed the best all-around performance in the young career of Clemson point guard Tasha Taylor.
The 5-9 native of Columbus, GA tied a career-high with 11 points, but set career bests in three categories. She had eight assists, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots. In addition, she had three steals for Clemson. She was one of three Lady Tigers in double figures, led by Reggie Maddox with 10. Red-shirt freshman Maxienne White added nine points and five boards.
Clemson is led in scoring by Maddox, who is at 9.8 points per game. Freshman wing D’Lesha Lloyd is at 8.9 points per game and had seven versus Wake Forest. Tasha Phillips was the team’s third-highest scorer, but is out for the remainder of the season due to a broken bone in her left foot.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets enter Thursday’s game with a 13-11 overall record, 4-8 in ACC play. Stephanie Higgs and Chioma Nnamaka have led the Jackets all season long in scoring. Higgs is at 13.8 points per game, while freshman Nnamaka is at 12.9. Another freshman, Jill Ingram, averages 7.5 points per game and leads the squad with 48 steals.
Tech enters the game having lost each of its last four contests, including a 73-55 defeat at the hands of conference leader Duke on Sunday.
