Volleyball Falls to NC State in Four Sets

CLEMSON, S.C. –  Despite a comeback effort at the end of each set, the Clemson Volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-21, 27-25, 17-25, 25-19) decision to NC State (13-9, 7-4 ACC) on Friday Night in Jervey Gym. Clemson (11-11, 3-8 ACC) fell to 7-5 inside Jervey Gym for the season.

Cate Long (12 kills and nine kills) and Kaylee Martin (12 kills) lead the Tiger offense, while Ani Clark added nine kills on .333 hitting. Setter Mckenna Slavik recorded 44 assists and guided Clemson to 48 kills for the day. On the defensive end, Anna Renwick registered 13 digs. 

The first set was even through the midpoint with a tied score of 18-18, the Tigers scored two in a row to extend the lead to 20-18. NC State responded with a 7-1 run behind three attack errors and two kills from Melissa Evans and closed the set, 25-20. 

The Wolfpack game out the gate swinging going on a 5-0 run to start the second set, but Clemson responded with a few runs of their own behind three kills from Kaylee Martin and 4 attack errors to bring the score to 11-12. North Carolina State went on a 4-0 run behind two kills from Jada Allen to extend the lead to 16-11. A long back-and-forth in the wake of three runs brought the Wolfpack at set point 24-19. Clemson responded with a 5-0 run to tie the set 24-24, but NC State scored three of the next four points to claim the set. 

The Tigers controlled the third set from the outset, hitting .431 in the frame and siding out on 17 of 18 Wolfpack service attempts, to take a 25-17 set victory. In the fourth, after trading points early, the Wolfpack broke open a 12-12 tie, going on a 7-2 run and taking control of the match.
