Virginia Tech Tops Clemson Sunday Afternoon

BLACKSBURG, VA. –  The Clemson men’s tennis team (10-14, 1-11 ACC) dropped a 4-1 match to Virginia Tech (9-15, 3-9 ACC) on Sunday afternoon.

Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Ryuhei Azuma looked solid from the first serve in doubles play. The Clemson pair and the No. 20 Hokie team in Chrysostom/Fishback were neck and neck for the whole match, but shortly after Virginia Tech registered two wins on Courts 2 and 3. The match on Court 1 went unfinished, and the Hokies registered the doubles point.

The Hokies earned a quick win on Court 6 in singles to extend their lead to 2-0 right before they won another match on Court 5 to give them a 3-0 advantage. Azuma picked up yet another ranked win on Court 1 beating No. 44 Fishback 6-4, 6-4. Matt Pitts battled on Court 4 to keep the Tigers in it but ultimately dropped the match, as Virginia Tech clinched a 4-1 win.

Up next, the Tigers will head to Cary, N.C. for ACC Championships next week. All action will take place at the Cary Tennis Center.
