Box Score

SPARTANBURG, SC – USC Upstate defeated Clemson 2-1 in a men’s soccer exhibition match at Spartanburg, SC Tuesday night.

This was the last exhibition match for the Tigers this season as the Tigers will began preparations for the season opener in 10 days.

USC Upstate’s Jan Wienholt scored in the 15th minute with an assist by Timo Foerster as the Spartans took a 1-0 lead.

Early in the second half at the 50:54 mark, Hakeem King scored with assists by Maurice Beggs and James Hadley to give USC Upstate a 2-0 advantage.

Clemson scored less than four minutes later as Austin Savage scored on an unassisted goal. Bo Godwin crossed the ball and the USC Upstate goalkeeper Jason McCabe could not handle the ball and Savage was there to send the ball in the net from close range.

Clemson took three shots in the last 10 minutes of play including Cedric Bullock’s shot that was high in the 86th minute.

“We played with lower intensity that we did the other night against UAB,” said Clemson Head Coach Mike Noonan. “They played with more energy and their attitude was better and that was the difference tonight. We woke up and finished the game with a better effort. This was a good experience for us playing on the road and this will bode well for us throughout the season.”

The Tigers will open the 2010 season on Friday, September 3, at South Carolina. Match time is set for 8:00 p.m.
