Two Tigers Set Qualifying Marks At Orange And Purple Classic

CLEMSON, SC – Two members of the Clemson men’s track and field team set qualifying marks at the Orange and Purple Classic held Sunday at the Rock Norman Track complex. Sultan Tucker automatically qualified in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.69. He had provisionally qualified earlier in the season, but automatically qualified this weekend. His time ranks him tied for seventh in the nation. Todd Matthews posted a provisional qualifying time of 13.72 in the 110m hurdles, but had automatically qualified in the event at the Clemson Invitational. He is currently tied for sixth in the nation with a time of 13.65.

In the running events, Jacey Harper won the 100m dash with a time of 10.39. David Collins finished seventh in 10.75, while Sultan Tucker was ninth (10.76) and Larry Griffin was tenth (10.77). Shauntae Lovings posted a time of 11.23 to finish 19th, and Todd Matthews and Ian Potter were 22nd (11.25). Matthews also ran in the 200m dash, finishing ninth with a time of 22.25. Matt Thompson finished tenth in the 400m dash with a time of 48.45. Mike Connelly won the 800m run with a time of 1:52.93, and Jason Meany finished fourth in the 5000m run with a time of 15:32.44. Tucker and Matthews took first and second, respectively, in the 110m hurdles, while Ian Potter finished fourth with a time of 14.23. Shauntae Lovings placed sixth (14.33) and Andy Giesler finished ninth overall with a time of 15.41. Tony Washington was the runner-up in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.74. The Tigers’ 4x100m relay team won the event in 40.10, while the 4x400m relay team also won with a time of 3:07.34.

In the field events, the Tigers swept the top three spots in the high jump. Doug Ameigh won the event as he cleared 6’11 3/4″, while Terrance McDaniel cleared the same height in a later round to take second. Bryant Howe finished third with a mark of 6’10 1/4″ and Giesler was eighth (6’4 3/4″). Giesler took second in the pole vault, clearing 15’5″, while Adam Klotzbach was third with a mark of 14’11”. Giesler won the shot put with a mark of 49’4 1/2″ and Matt Lombardi was second (48’8 3/4″). Kai Maull placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 22’3″. Giesler placed third in the discus (1554’1″), while Lombardi finished fourth (153′).

The Tigers will compete at the Reebok Invitational this weekend in Atlanta, GA.
