Traditions of Tigertown

Traditions of Tigertown

The sun rises early on game day in Clemson. Each fall Saturday is a combination of the past and present. It’s college football’s esteemed Coach John Heisman roaming the sidelines in 1900. It’s Clemson’s legendary Coach Frank Howard and his Death Valley rock that players rub as they “Run Down The Hill” into the stadium. It’s orange Tiger Paws painted on the highways leading into Clemson. And it’s the orange-clad legions of Tiger fans. It’s much more than a game. It’s an event!

Perhaps that’s why The Sporting News has recognized Clemson as one of the top campuses in America to witness a college football game. Once you’ve been to a game in Clemson, you’ll wonder how any could be better.

Running Down “The Hill” “When Clemson players rub that rock and run down the hill, it’s the most exciting 25 seconds in college football.” Brent Musberger ABC Sports

The Mystical Powers of “The Rock” “The rock has strange powers. When you rub it, and run down the hill, the adrenaline flows. It’s the most emotional experience I’ve ever had.” Michael Dean Perry Six-time All-Pro and former Clemson All-American

The Thrill of Death Valley “Clemson’s record at home is not a coincidence. Running down the hill is part of the record. You get so inspired, and so much about college football is about emotion. You get out of that bus, hear the roar of the crowd, and chills go up and down your spine.” David Treadwell Former Clemson All-American and NFL kicker

A National Championship Season In 1981, Clemson claimed the ACC Championship, finished the regular season with an 11-0 record and No. 1 ranking, and captured its first National Championship with a win over Nebraska in the 1981 Orange Bowl. Upon “The Rock” a Tradition Was Built
