Tigers Win Season Opener Against Furman in Dominant Fashion, 6-1

CLEMSON, S.C. —  The Tigers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) earned wins on Courts 2 and 3 to secure the doubles point and continued the momentum into singles as the Tigers earned their first win of the season against Furman (0-1, 0-0 SOCON), 6-1.

Spencer Whitaker and Ryuhei Azuma defeated Westling and Roelofse while freshman Max Smith and Jorge Plans Gonzalez clinched the doubles point for the Tigers on Court 3, defeating Burnum and Laymon, 6-4.

Freshmen Smith and Matt Pitts picked up the first two singles points for the Tigers on Court 6 and Court 5, respectively, as they recorded their first ever singles victory in their Clemson debut. Soon after, Plans Gonzalez, Azuma and Whitaker all recorded victories on their courts.

“It was a fantastic start to the season,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss.  “We played with lots of energy and were very disciplined on the court. I give all the credit to the 11 players on our roster for putting in the work every single day. I am so proud of their progress and their dedication to the program. Great things are ahead for this team.”
