Tigers Win Eighth Straight With 4-3 Victory Over Florida State On Friday Afternoon

TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Clemson women’s tennis team extended its winning streak to eight matches with a 4-3 victory over Florida State on Friday afternoon. The 24th-ranked Tigers improved to 12-4 on the year with a 5-1 record against ACC competition, while the Seminoles fell to 8-9 overall and 1-6 in league play. Clemson recorded its 13th doubles point this season and then posted victories at the flight one, two and four positions.

In doubles competition, the Tigers won their sixth straight doubles point by claiming matches at the flight one and three positions. Daniela Alvarez and Alexandra Luc, currently ranked #49 in the Fila/ITA doubles poll, moved up to the top slot with Federica van Adrichem out of the line-up and earned the victory. The Clemson team defeated Whitney Eber and Nicola Slater by a score of 9-8(1). At flight three, Carol Salge and Kathi Gerber won an 8-3 decision over Tapiwa Marobela and Lisa Nystrom Skold. The Tigers’ team of Maria Brito and Marie Scriba fell at flight two to Suzanna Mansour and Ania Rynarzewska, 8-5.

Salge then put Clemson ahead, 2-0, with a win over Alina Mihailescu at the flight two singles position, 6-1, 6-0, and Luc scored the Tigers’ third point of the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Marobela at flight four. Slater scored the Seminoles’ first point, defeating Brito at flight three, 6-3, 6-4 and Mansour narrowed the Tigers’ lead to 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Gerber in the flight five match-up.

Alvarez then clinched the victory for Clemson, winning a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Rynarzewska at the number one singles slot. At flight six, the Tigers’ Scriba fell to Nystrom Skold by a score of 6-2, 6-4.

Clemson will travel further south to take on the fifth-ranked Hurricanes of Miami on Sunday afternoon. The teams are scheduled to begin play at 11:00 am at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, FL.
