Tigers Upset #14 UCLA, 4-3, At USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships On Saturday

MADISON, WI – Senior Maria Brito clinched #18 Clemson’s 4-3 upset over 14th-ranked UCLA with her victory at the flight five position on Saturday in Madison, WI. With the win, the Tigers concluded play at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a 2-1 record in the event, while improving their overall record to 4-1.

The Bruins fell to 3-2 on the year.

The Tigers won all three doubles match-ups for the second straight day to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ani Mijackia and Federica van Adrichem teamed up to post a 9-8 upset of UCLA’s 17th-ranked team of Yasmin Schnack and Riza Zalameda at the top position. Estefania Balda and Ina Hadziselmovic then defeated Tracy Lin and Elizabeth Lumpkin by an 8-6 margin at flight three, while Brito and Alexandra Luc won at number two, 8-7(3), over Ashley Joelson and Alex McGoodwin.

The Bruins tied the score at 1-1 as Lumpkin defeated the Tigers’ Selma Babic at flight six, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Clemson regained the lead as van Adrichem won her third straight match, defeating Joelson at the number four position (6-3, 3-6, 6-4). Balda then put the Tigers on top, 3-1, with a three-set upset of #28 Schnack at flight two, 7-6, 3-6, 7-5.

At flight three, Hadziselimovic fell in straight sets to Lin, 6-0, 6-0, to put UCLA within one at 3-2. However, Brito’s 6-4, 7-5, win over McGoodwin gave the victory to Clemson. The final point of the day was decided at the flight one position, as Mijacika took 35th-ranked Zalameda to three sets before falling, 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-4.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 10, as they will travel to Richmond, VA to take on the Virginia Commonwealth Rams.
