CLEMSON, S.C. — The Tigers (3-0, 0-0 ACC) started out the gate hot by winning the doubles point and continued rolling in singles as Clemson won five of the six matches to beat ETSU (0-3, 0-0 SOCON). The Tigers earned their third straight win, the best start under Head Coach Robbie Weiss.
Spencer Whitaker and Ryuhei Azuma continued their hot streak by winning 6-3 on Court 1 to push the Tigers ahead, in need of only one more doubles victory. Jorge Plans Gonzalez and true freshman Max Smith responded to the task at hand and fought for a 7-5 win on Court 3 to clinch the doubles point.
Smith finished his match first as he won his third straight singles match before Plans Gonzalez and Azuma also picked up victories on Courts 3 and 2, respectively. Whitaker continued his impressive play by registering his third straight win while Teodor Giusca saw his first singles action on Court 1 this season and defeated ETSU’s Badra, 6-4, 6-4 to take the match.
“It was a solid win for us today,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. “ETSU is a very good team. Their coach, Martin Steigwardt, does a very good job year in and year out with their program. We did a great job pulling out a tough doubles point today. We started off well in singles but had a small dip which we need to address for future matches. Overall, we are very pleased with the win and really excited to play next week in Waco, TX in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.”
