Tigers Set to Face Detroit Mercy Monday Night

Clemson, S.C. – The Clemson men’s soccer team will welcome a new foe to town on Monday night, as the University of Detroit Mercy Titans come to Historic Riggs Field to take on the Tigers. The match, slated for a 5 p.m. start on Sept. 2, will be the first contest between the two schools in program history. Both teams will take to the field with 1-0 records, as each won its opening match in convincing fashion.

Who: Clemson Tigers (1-0) v. Detroit Mercy Titans (1-0)

When: Monday, Sept. 2nd at 5 p.m. Gates open at 4 p.m.

Series Notes

  • Monday night’s match will be the first between the Tigers and Titans.
  • This will be the first time in program history that the Tigers face a team from Michigan.
  • Detroit Mercy, a member of the Horizon League, is the fourth conference school to face Clemson. Overall, Clemson holds a 3-2-1 record against Horizon League member schools.
  • The last time the Tigers played a Horizon League school was in 1993, losing 2-3 to Wisconsin-Green Bay.

  • Clemson enters Monday after dismantling South Carolina at home on opening night by a score of 4-1.
  • Grayson Barber scored a brace, with Kimarni Smith and Quinn McNeill each netting one goal.
  • Four different players contributed assists to the goals.
  • The win was the Tigers’ ninth-consecutive home opening win and moved them to 7-2 overall on season openers the past nine seasons.
  • Clemson has now won the past six match-ups against the Gamecocks.
  • The win was Head coach Mike Noonan’s 93rd win at the helm of Clemson’s program.
  • Monday night’s match will be Head coach Mike Noonan’s 13th contest against a new program while at Clemson. Entering the match, he boasts a 6-4-2 record against new opponents.
  • Clemson has only played in one other 5 p.m. match leading up to Monday’s contest over the past two years. The match was against Cal-State Fullerton, another first-time opponent for the opponent.

Detroit Mercy Notes

  • Detroit Mercy comes to town after opening their season at home against Niagara. The Titans won the match 2-nil, scoring two goals in the second half.
  • The Titans are coached by Head coach Nicholas Deren, who is in his 10thseason at the helm of the program.
  • The Titans won their lone match last season against Robert Morris.
