Tigers Tied Fifth As Play Is Suspended At Palmetto Intercollegiate

Clemson, S.C. – The Clemson women’s golf team battled through 36 holes on Sunday, finishing in a tie for fifth as play was halted due to darkness before North Carolina, Indiana, and host team College of Charleston could finish. The Palmetto Intercollegiate, held at the Turtle Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C., will conclude Monday with the final 18 holes left to be played for the Tigers.

Wake Forest holds the first position as a team at 11-over, while East Carolina finishes the day in second at 27-over.

As a unit, the Tigers fired an opening-round 315 score, led by a two-over-par, 74 score from sophomore Savannah Grewal. Ivy Shepherd, who was the Tigers’ top competitor in the 2019-20 shortened season and low finisher in the spring opener, finished the first 18 holes at six-over-par.

Battling back in the last half of action, the Tigers improved their first-round score by 21 strokes as they entered the clubhouse with the second-lowest, second-round score of the day at 294.

After shooting an eight-over par, 80 to open the tournament, Alexandra Swayne notched the Tigers’ lowest score of the day with a one-under-par 71 in the final 18 holes. The junior dropped five of her six birdies during her second-round performance, a mark that led the team alongside Grewal.

Shepherd improved her first found by five strokes, shooting a one-over-par 73 to bring her 36-hole total to 151, just two strokes behind Grewal’s 149. Grewal enters the final round in a tie for ninth as Shepherd and Swayne sit tied for 17th.

Gracyn Burgess, who shot an 11-over 83 in the first round, followed up with an eight-shot improvement with a final round 75.

Clemson finished the day tied for the lead with 26 total birdies alongside Golfweek’s seventh-ranked Wake Forest squad.

Players from College of Charleston, North Carolina, and Indiana will resume their rounds tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. (ET). The final round will tee-off at 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. (ET) from the No. 1 and No. 10 holes.
