CHARLOTTE, NC – The Clemson women’s soccer team finished in a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Charlotte on Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field in Charlotte, NC. The double-overtime draw was the second in three days for the Tigers, who are now 5-1-2 on the season, while the 49ers move to 4-2-1. The Tigers have advanced to overtime in four of their last six contests, and have a 1-1-2 record in those games.
Charlotte-native Liska Dobberstein put Clemson on the board at the 10:59 mark in the first half. The sophomore forward took the shot from the right post and sent it into the netting on the left side of the goal. It was the fourth goal of the year for Dobberstein, who is now just two goals away from matching her season total of six from her freshman season in 2011.
Senior Maddy Elder recorded the assist on Dobberstein’s goal. The assist was the sixth of the season and the 16th of her career for Elder, who has flourished at the midfield position in 2012 after playing as a forward for the past three seasons. Elder needs just two more assists to move into the top 10 in Clemson history in career assists, and needs four to move into the top 10 in single-season assists.
Charlotte’s Dakota Olson evened the score in the 77th minute of play. She was assisted by Amanda Jones. Neither team scored in the final 13:58 of regulation or the two 10-minute overtime periods.
The Tigers took 25 shots in the game compared to the 49ers’ 11, and had five corner kicks to Charlotte’s three. There were seven fouls called on each team. Freshman keeper Hunter Rittgers posted two saves in goal for Clemson and Alex Kubrick recorded 10 for the 49ers.
“We had enough chances today to score four or five goals,” said head coach Eddie Radwanski. “When you don’t finish, you leave the game open to chance. We should be disappointed in the fact that we did not win that game.”
Clemson will begin play on the road in the difficult Atlantic Coast Conference next week as it travels to Boston College and Maryland. Seven conference teams are ranked in the top 18 in the nation according to the most recent NSCAA poll. The Tigers will face the #6 Eagles on Thursday, September 13 at 7 PM in Newton, MA and the Terrapins on Sunday, September 16 at 1 PM in College Park, MD.
