Tigers Sweep #15 Wake Forest, 7-0, On Sunday Afternoon

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – With their 7-0 win over 15th-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon at the Leighton Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, NC, the Clemson women’s tennis team posted its seventh victory over a top-25 opponent during the 2007 season, while improving to 17-3 on the year and 8-1 in ACC action.

The Tigers, ranked #8 in the most recent Fila/ITA Tennis poll, won the doubles point for the 16th time this year en route to their third sweep of 2007.

Wake Forest fell to 12-6 overall and 6-4 against conference foes.

Clemson entered singles play with a 1-0 lead for the fourth straight contest after winning two of three doubles match-ups. Ani Mijacika and Federica van Adrichem rebounded from a loss on Saturday to defeat the Deac tandem of Alex Hirsch and Ashlee Davis, 8-4, at the flight one position. Maria Brito and Carol Salge also posted a pairs victory, winning by an 8-3 margin over Christine Simpson and Sierra Poske at number three. With the win, Brito moved into a tie for third place in school history with 93 career doubles victories.

Clemson’s team of Estefania Balda and Ina Hadziselimovic fell to Wake Forest’s Ana Jerman and Sasha Kulikova at flight two, 8-3.

Mijacika extended her singles winning streak to 12 straight with her come-from-behind win over Ashlee Davis at flight one (3-6, 6-3, 10-7), while Salge defeated Ana Jerman at the number two position in three sets as well, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5. Balda then won by a 6-3, 6-1 margin against Kulikova at flight three and van Adrichem posted a straight set victory over Poske in the flight four match-up (6-1, 6-1). Brito defeated Christian Tara at the number five slot, winning the first and third sets, 6-4 and 10-5. Hadziselimovic scored the fourth and clinching point for the Tigers with her 6-2, 6-4 win over Simpson at flight six.

Clemson will be back on the road next weekend as the Tigers conclude the 2007 regular season with matches at Virginia and Virginia Tech.
