CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team (8-1) was victorious in both legs of its doubleheader on Saturday with a 6-1 win over Elon and a 4-0 win over App State. The wins improved the Tigers’ home record to an impressive 7-0 in the 2023 campaign.
“We take a lot of pride competing on our terms, and our goal today was to compete with confidence and create synergy,” said Head Coach Amy Sargeant. “The first match outside was tricky. Elon are a very competitive team and pushed us at multiple spots today.”
In their first match against Elon, the Tigers cruised through doubles winning the point with victories from Eleni Louka and Cristina Mayorova 6-2 and Sophia Hatton and Daniella Medvedeva (6-2). Hatton and Medvedeva continue their success as a doubles pair and move to 7-1 on the season.
The Tigers opened up singles play with a dominant victory on court 2 by Cristina Mayorova 6-0, 6-0. Dani Medvedeva had success against Elon as well, winning her singles match 6-2, 6-3. On courts 4 and 5 Jenna Thompson and Sophia Hatton were victorious in their respective matches winning 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-4. Elon took a win on court 1 but Samantha Buyckx capped off the last singles game in a tiebreak thriller 6-4, 6-7, 10-5.
“Cristina handled business early in both matches and continues to grow and play to her strengths,” said Sargeant on Mayorova. “I’m extremely proud of her progress thus far.”
The script was similar against App State, as the pairs of Louka and Leigh Van Zyl as well as Mayorova and Medvedeva secured doubles wins to earn the point for Clemson.
“Dynamic duo (Cristina & Dani) created momentum early with doubles playing fearless and aggressive tennis. Leigh and Elena closed out the point with dominant net play.”
In singles play, Mayorova only continued her dominance, winning 6-1, 6-2 on Court 2 and moved to 8-1 on the season. Medvedeva won Court 4 6-2, 6-1 and senior Lana Sipek clinched the match on Court 6, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
“Lana stepped up and served well to clinch the second match.”
The Tigers will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at Duckworth Family Tennis Facility to take on in-state rival South Carolina. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
“When we focus on the controllables, this team is capable of great things,” continued Sargeant. “We look forward to competing on our terms on Tuesday!!”
