Tigers Rally to Beat Seminoles, Move to 3-0 in ACC Play

CLEMSON, S.C. – The 14th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team rallied to win its third straight conference match on Friday with a 4-3 victory over No. 52 Florida State in Tallahassee. With the win, the Tigers improved to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in ACC play, while the Seminoles fell to 5-3 (0-1 ACC).

Clemson’s duo of Joana Eidukonyte and Daniela Ruiz jumped out to a fast start in doubles, defeating their Florida State opponent 8-4 at No. 3. The pair is now 11-2 overall and 5-1 in dual matches and is riding a five-match win streak. The nation’s number-one ranked team of Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies then recorded their 12th win in a row, an 8-5 victory at the top doubles slot, to clinch the doubles point. The duo is an impressive 21-1 overall and 9-0 in dual matches. As a team, the Tigers have won the doubles point 10 times in their 11 matches on the season.

With the Tigers leading 1-0, Ruiz fell at No. 6 singles and Gumulya fell at No. 2 singles before the Tigers rallied back to take the lead. Rompies, No. 58 Romy Koelzer and No. 20 Eidukonyte all won their matches to clinch the Clemson victory. Rompies won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles to get the momentum started and No. 58 Koelzer followed suit, defeating No. 73 Cartwright 7-6, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Ultimately, No. 20 Joana Eidukonyte, playing in the top spot for the Tigers, won 7-5, 7-5 to seal the deal. Eidukonyte trailed in the second set before rallying for three straight points. She is now 21-4 overall and 8-1 in dual matches. After winning the first set, Tristen Dewar fell at No. 5 singles.

From Tallahassee, the Tigers travel to Coral Gables for another tough ACC test. Clemson takes on No. 20 Miami Sunday, March 1 at 11 a.m. before returning home to host Louisville Saturday, March 7 at 3:30 p.m.
