CLEMSON, SC – The 34th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team upset #19 William & Mary, 4-3, at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers claimed the doubles point in the match and then won three singles match-ups for their second win, against just one loss, of the 2006 season. The loss was the Tribe’s first of the season and dropped them to 7-1 overall.
At the top doubles position, Carol Salge and Federica van Adrichem teamed up for the first time to post an 8-4 victory over William & Mary’s Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic. Clemson’s Maria Brito and Marie Scriba defeated Lauren Cash and Megan Muth at the flight two slot by a score of 8-4, while Daniela Alvarez and Alexandra Luc claimed the No. 3 match-up by an 8-3 margin over Emmy Fitz-Krockow and Barbara Zidek.
In singles action, van Adrichem, ranked #41 in the ITA singles poll, won her flight two contest over Muth, 7-5, 6-3. Brito defeated Cash at flight four, 7-5, 6-1, and Salge clinched the match for the Tigers at the flight three position with a 6-2, 7-6(4) win over Zoricic.
Alvarez fell in the number one singles contest to Moulton-Levy, 6-2, 6-0, while Scriba suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Fitz-Krockow at flight five. William & Mary’s Lingda Yang defeated Luc at the flight six position by a score of 6-3, 6-0.
Next up for the Tigers is Furman on Saturday, Feb. 18. Clemson and the Paladins will begin play at 11:00 AM at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on the Clemson campus.
