GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team won both matches of its doubleheader on Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University. The Tigers defeated Charlotte 7-0 and UNC Greensboro 5-2, to improve to 7-6 on the season.
Clemson 7, Charlotte 0The 49ers won at No. 3 doubles, but the Tigers rebounded with wins at No. 1 and 2 to claim the doubles point. Marie-Alexandre Leduc and Fernanda Navarro won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, improving to 5-2 on the season. Ally Miller-Krasilnikov and Tate Schroeder clinched the doubles point, defeating their Charlotte opponents 6-1 at No. 2
Leduc, Navarro and Schroeder won in straight sets at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Schroeder’s 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 3 clinched the team victory for the Tigers. Sydney Riley fought back after losing the first set to win at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(7). Miller-Krasilnikov won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5, and freshman Laura Marti earned her first career dual-match win as a Tiger, defeating her 49er opponent, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0(10), at No. 6 singles. Marti trailed 1-5 in her third-set super tiebreak, before coming back to win 12-10 to complete the singles sweep for the Tigers.
Clemson 5, UNC Greensboro 2Laura Marti and Sydney Riley opened doubles play with a quick 6-1 win at No. 3, and Marie-Alexandre Leduc and Fernanda Navarro then won 6-3 at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point. The Tigers have won the doubles point in eight matches this season, and Leduc and Navarro have clinched the doubles point four times.
Riley opened singles play with a quick, 6-0, 6-1, victory at No. 3, and Ally Miller-Krasilnikov followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. For the second time today, Tate Schroeder clinched the team victory for Clemson, winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Daniela Ruiz won at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3, to provide the final point of the match for the Tigers.
The Clemson team hits the road next week for two ACC matches, at Syracuse and Boston College. The Tigers face the Orange in Syracuse, N.Y. on Friday, March 16 at 1 p.m., and meet the Eagles in Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Sunday, March 18 at 11 a.m.
