Tigers Open Day 1 of ITA Regionals With Strong Performances

CARY, N.C. – The Clemson men’s tennis team got off to a strong start on day 1 of ITA Regionals. Four Tigers won a pair of matches in the main draw including Ryuhei Azuma, Jorge Plans Gonzalez, Spencer Whitaker and Teodor Giusca. Yizhou Liu dropped a pair of matches despite a strong showing on his court, and Matt Pitts battled sickness and came up just short in the main draw before withdrawing from his consolation match.

“I am proud of the boys for the way they competed today,” said Head Coach Robbie Weiss. “It was a long day with an earlier rain delay, but they were tough in the big moments, and four of our six players won both their singles matches today. Spencer had to dig deep in his afternoon match and beat a very good player from North Carolina. Ryuhei, Jorge and Teo had some tough moments in their matches but did a great job finding another gear to get the wins. I am excited to see them come back and compete tomorrow against some excellent players.”
