Tigers Open ACC Season with Win over Hokies

CLEMSON, S.C. – The 14th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team started off conference play with a bang, defeating No. 50 Virginia Tech 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. With the win, the Tigers improve to 5-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, while the Hokies fall to 5-2 and 0-1 in the ACC.

The Tigers won the doubles point for the eighth time in nine matches. The duo of Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies started off with an 8-4 win on court one to move to 19-1 overall and 7-0 in dual matches this spring. The 59th-ranked team of Tristen Dewar and Romy Koelzer then fell in a close match by a score of 8-6 on court two. It came down to court three, where Joana Eidukonyte and Daniela Ruiz, ranked 44th nationally, won 8-6 over the Hokies to clinch the doubles point for the Tigers.

With the Tigers leading 1-0, No. 35 Koelzer fell 6-4, 6-1 on court one to even the score. Gumulya, ranked 119th, then got the momentum back with a 7-5, 6-2 win on court three. At number two singles, No. 23 Eidukonyte got a win of her own, defeating Fusinato 6-3, 6-4, to extend the Tigers’ lead to 3-1. Rompies and Virginia Tech’s Daxhelet took a three-set match down to the wire, with Daxhelet ultimately prevailing. In the end, Tristen Dewar prevailed on court five 6-0, 6-3 and clinched the match for the Tigers. Yuilynn Miao, playing at No. 6 singles for the second consecutive match, won 7-6, 1-0 (7).

Clemson travels to Winston-Salem to face No. 51 Wake Forest to take on Sunday, Feb. 22 at noon. The Tigers are 29-17 all-time in the series against the Demon Deacons, and have an 11-6 record in matches played in Winston-Salem.
