CLEMSON, S.C. – Claire Wagner’s 102nd minute goal lifted No. 10 Clemson over No. 5 Notre Dame Friday night at Historic Riggs Field. The Tigers remained undefeated with the win (7-0-1, 1-0-0 ACC) and the loss was the first of the year for the Irish (7-1-1, 0-1 ACC). It was also Clemson’s first win over Notre Dame in three tries.
The win is the second over a top-10 team for the Tigers this season, as they previously upset No. 8 South Carolina on Aug. 28.
The game was scoreless for 101 minutes when a Notre Dame defender attempted to clear a ball that was intercepted by junior defender Claire Wagner from 24 yards out. Wagner settled the ball, put it on frame and it crossed the goal line to give the Tigers a win in their ACC opener.
Junior goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan tallied five saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the 2015 season and the 19th of her career. Notre Dame took 15 shots in the game, while the Tigers took 13 shots and accumulated six corner kicks to Notre Dame’s two.
The Tigers will take a road trip to Florida this coming week to square off with Florida State on Thursday, Sept. 24 and Miami Sunday, Sept 27. The Tigers will return home for a four game home stand starting Friday, Oct. 2 against Wake Forest at Historic Riggs Field. As always, admission is free to regular season home games.
